On 21 May 2015, for the first time, the Indian Air Force successfully made a Mirage 2000 fighter jet land on the Yamuna expressway, near Mathura. A
important decision was taken to carry out an exercise using and existing road network as an emergency landing and take – off facility for military
aircrafts during emergency situations. Here is the reason why:
Threat to support system from an aerial attack during war
During a war, enemies may bomb the runway causing a hindrance in take off and landing. Nations world wide build highway patches which can be
used for emergency landings and take offs during war time, so that if needed, fighter jets can use them.

The Indian Air Force has been preparing a vital back - up option for some time. This explains the importance of having many more smooth and long
expressways like the Yamuna expressway. This also explains the Indian government’s deep focus on having a large network of expressways in order
to facilitate military landing and take- off during emergencies. .

The 308 Km Agra–Luknow Expressway is expected to cost 13000 crore rupees. It will pass through Firozabad, Shikohabad, Manipuri, Etawah, Kannauj
and Mohanlalganj.
