The Young Chronicle: For 4th Graders April 18th, 2015

April 18th, 2015 THE YOUNG CHRONICLE For 9-10 Year Olds or 4-5th Graders Is the Cat Going Up or Coming Down? First a dress divided the internet, now a new debate is sweeping the web and it's all over a humble tabby cat. At first glance the cat in a black and white photo looks as if it is walking down a flight of stairs, but look again and the image appears to flip. Some insist the cat is travelling downstairs because of the step edges and the bright patch behind the animal. But others say the image is looking down onto the top of the steps, each of which has a raised grip on it. They claim the light patch is the floor at the bottom. What do you think? THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR…WATER Do you know like the Nobel Prize for Physics, Literature and Peace, there is also a Nobel Prize for Water?! Well, not really! But there is the Stockholm Water Prize which is also known as the Nobel Prize for Water. This year, it was awarded to Rajendra Singh, who is dubbed ‘the Water Man of India’. He has brought water to a 1,000 Indian villages. The judges of the Stockholm Water PADMA VIBHUSHAN AMITABH BACHCHAN Prize say his methods have also prevented floods, restored soil and rivers, and brought back wildlife. They thought his technique is cheap, simple, and that his ideas should be followed worldwide. Rajendra Singh uses a modern version of the ancient Indian technique of rainwater harvesting. It involves building low-level banks of earth to hold back the flow of water in the wet season and allow water to seep into the ground for future use. Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was honored with the country’s second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan . The ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The award was also conferred on Malur Ramaswamy Srinivasan for his work in science and engineering and jurist K.K. Venugopal for public affairs. The Padma Vibhushan for the megastar comes on the heels of an Honorary Doctorate from the Egyptian Academy of Arts for his contribution to cinema. Amitabh Bachchan has also been earlier honored with Padma Shri in 1984 and Padma Bhushan in 2001 for his contribution to the field of arts.
