Detective Dinky & the Case of the Mist Monster
Dinky loved to spend most of her evenings playing tag in the front garden. Sometimes, when Daddy would come
home from work early enough, it was time for hide and seek!
It was winter, and every morning, Dinky looked out the window. She could see nothing but mist covering most of the
garden. Even her favourite tree in the garden would start to look like a tall, dark pillar.
Mama would never let Dinky go out alone into the garden during these misty days and would ask her to sit in and
drink hot chocolate. Dinky was more than happy to sit with a hot mug of chocolate, and colour in her new picture
book.
One morning, Mama left for the market to buy some groceries.
Dinky pretended to be asleep as Mama kissed her goodbye for a
while. Of course, as soon as Mama left, Dinky slipped into her
sneakers, put on her woolly, fluffy dressing gown and walked to
the misty garden. It looked rather strange, but Dinky was
determined to go and take a look around the garden for herself.
Dinky could only see till an arm’s distance as she walked through
the mist. She was walking towards her favourite tree. This was
the first time she saw this tree in the winter. When she was close
enough to look up at it, she saw that it still looked as friendly as
ever. Just as Dinky walked a few steps, she noticed something
odd on one of the top branches. Something moved, but Dinky
could not see clearly what it was.
Before the thing moved again, Dinky ran towards the house. As she ran, she could hear a leaf or two rustling on her
favourite tree! What had happened to it? What was sitting on its branch? It could be a monster that came out on
misty days! Dinky decided to come back the next day to investigate the matter. She would not be afraid!
Luckily too, the next morning, Mama stepped out again to the neighbour’s for a cup of tea. Dinky quickly dressed up
for the cold again and stepped into the misty garden. She was ready to face whatever was on top of her favourite
tree.
