THE CASTLE GHOST There was a ruined castle near the village where Dimpy and Lucky and lived, and a mysterious ghost was said to roam among the stone walls, moaning and groaning. One cold, dark evening Dimpy and Lucky dared each other to go into the castle! They pretended to be very brave as they climbed the gate into the field where the ruins stood. The walls stood up black and unfriendly against the sky, and the wind seemed to whisper in all the dark corners. “Perhaps there isn’t any ghost” said Dimpy. “Even if there is,” said Lucky, “I’m not scared of it.!” “Not am I” said Dimpy. “Then why are you shivering” asked Lucky. “I’m just cold, that’s all” Dimpy said. “Besides, you’re shivering too.” “No, I’m not” said Lucky. “Yes, you are!” Dimpy persisted. “No, I’m not…at all!” Lucky shouted. “Shh!” whispered Dimpy suddenly. “Listen! I thought I heard footsteps. ”They clutched each other and listened. Sure enough, someone or something was treading heavily on the grass, just behind the wall where they stood. “It’s the mysterious ghost!” whispered Lucky. “What shall we do?” “Stay quite still,” said Dimpy. “It may go away again without seeing us.” Just then, from behind the wall, came a terrifying sound, like a loud, deep moan. Dimpy and Lucky gasped, and started running, through the ruins and across the field. They scrambled over the gate and ran and ran, until they fell at the door of their parents’ cottage. “What have you two been doing?” asked their mother. “We were just having a race”, gasped Lucky. “Well, get yourselves washed, and I’ll give you some tea”, said their mother. When they were ready for tea, their father came in and said he’d just met Farmer Jagan, bringing back one of his cows that had strayed into the castle. “Jagan said it was mooing away as if it was really upset.” said their father. “He wondered if it had seen the ghost!” He laughed. Dimpy and Lucky looked at each other. So that was what they had heard – Jagan’s cow, tramping about, and then starting to moo. They began to join in the laughter! The mysterious ghost turned out to be a grass-eating animal after all.
