YOUNG CHRONICLE November 28th, 2014 THE YOUNG CHRONICLE Who is a Saint? Rohan and Priyanka (who like to be known as Rambo and Pranks) our very own curious kids were quite enthusiastic, that Pope Francis had announced two Indian priests, Father Kuriakose Chavara and Sister Euphrasia as Saints; the news was quite fantastic. Who is a saint? And who are Father Kuriakose Chavara and Sister Euphrasia? But Pranks and Rambo found it strange, they knew nothing about these saints! Amidst the noise over elections and power, did the media not have any time to praise those who helped people ever? While pranks sought information about these saints, Rambo was still trying to find out, ‘Who are Saints?’ Papa then gave the curious kids an explanation, that anyone with a high degree of Holiness was considered a Saintly person. Like Hindus have Rishis, and Muslims have Mu'mins, the Christians have Saints. Saints are people who are extremely kind and dedicate their lives to help other people despite their own constraints. Father Chavara worked towards education of women. He started a system of “A School With Every Church” which succeeded in making education free. He died at Age 65, in 1871, Jan 3. Sister Euphrasia was declared a servant of god in 1987, 25 years after her death. Her miracles and helpfulness was noticed only much after she had left. The strange thing is that the Church recognises people as Saints only after they die. It gives them an honourable funeral and that’s where happiness it denies. Isn’t it sad that a person who lives for others is honoured only after death? What meaning has it for the soul that has already left? Christianity believes, and honours the soul after it leaves for heaven. But wouldn’t it be better to make such announcements when a person alive, and could still make Earth a beautiful Haven?! The 25 Best Inventions of 2014 Did you know MOM has been featured as one of Time Magazine’s 25 Best Inventions of 2014? Well, recently ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) had sent a Satellite to Mars, called the Mars Obiter Mission (MOM) or Mangalyaan. Mangalyaan entered the Mars' orbit on September 24, 2014. This made India the first country to achieve this in the very first attempt. The Indian Space and Research Organisation or ISRO is India's primary space agency. The Mangalyaan traveled 650 million kilometers from earth. If calculated, the cost comes up to Rs. 6.7 per kilometer. This turns out to be cheaper than a regular rickshaw ride in the city! It weighed 1,350 kgs and was ready in 15 months. The main engine was referred to as Kumbhakaran or the sleeping demon, who had been awakened. TIME magazine referred to Mangalyaan as The Supersmart Spacecraft! The magazine also featured several inventions that are according to it, were "making the world better, smarter and-in some cases-a little more fun." The list also includes inventions by two Indians for developing an exercise space for prisoners and a tablet toy for kids. Imagine sitting in a room by yourself for a very long time. Now, imagine you are running around and playing in the park. In a prison in the American state of Oregon, some prisoners are locked up alone and see nothing but a tiny white- walled cell for 23 hours in a day. Nalini Nadkarni, an Indian forest scientist and college professor helped develop the 'Blue Room' for these prisoners. This as a device will help Prisoners from dealing with loneliness.
