Each sport venue was overseen by a physician venue leader who was on site every day the venue was open — for both practices and games . These physician leaders were selected because of their background in sports medicine and knowledge of complex musculoskeletal injury recognition , evaluation and treatment . The physician venue leaders were responsible for the day-to-day operations of and supervision of the medical staff at their venue . The Sports Medicine staff was responsible for providing sideline care to the competing athletes , coaches , and team staff members .
The sideline care staffing plan at each venue was designed to keep the athletes at their field of play as well as to provide any pre-practice and pre-competition medical care . The venues were staffed at a level to provide at least one physician and one athletic trainer at each sport or field of play . Multiple athletic trainers were utilized at venues with larger athlete numbers . These sports medicine teams , who were more familiar with sideline medicine , were spread out across all venues to act as the first line of care and to consult with in regards to more complex return-to-play decisions .
Staffing was managed and updated by a staffing matrix . This matrix was designed to staff each venue with the appropriate Sports Medicine volunteers based on the sport of play and the needs of those specific athletes . Sports Medicine physicians and athletic trainers were recruited by each venue physician leader to sign up for coverage of practice and competition play .
