Jan Lewis to Lead
2014 Portland HBA
Charbonneau's Jan Lewis is
this year's president of the Portland Home Builders Association
(HBA). The second woman President and the first woman builder
to serve.
Jan's father was an architect
and earned a Business Administration degree at Oregon State
University. Her minor was in forestry, specifically forest products.
Essentially, she grew up around
construction all of her life.
As a senior, she was introduced
to Hoffman Construction, where
she was hired her in 1977 as the
company's first woman in a management role.
"Commercial construction in
the 70s was dominated by unions;
and the industry, in some ways,
felt a bit like the wild west," she
said. Jan worked there for 12
years before opening her own
business, Tryon Creek Construction.
She started Tryon Creek Construction when her son, Eric,
was born. She and her husband,
Ken, wanted Jan to be home with
the baby. Jan also wanted to stay
involved with her career. Tryon
Creek Construction has been an
HBA member for 20 years.
In the early years, Jan mainly
took advantage of the educational
opportunities that were offered –
anything to continue to improve
her skills. In 2002, she submitted
the required references and took
the classes and test to become the
State of Oregon's second Certified
Master Builder.
Ernie Platt facilitated that first
Master Builder class and asked if
Jan would serve on the Tri-County One and Two-Family Code Forum Council. That little request
soon led to her serving on the Oregon HBA board, the Education
Committee and the Board of the
Portland HBA.
"I am grateful for those who
believed in me, encouraged me
to get involved and have supported me the 36 years of my career - from my family, to those at
Hoffman Construction, to Tryon
Creek’s subcontractors and suppliers, and to the members and
staff of the Portland HBA," she
said.
In her new role, she wants to
continue to help lead the HBA in
government affairs and advocacy

work, the production of shows
and events and the peer-to-peer
and industry-focused information
provided to members.
She wants to help engage more
builders in the Association, including builder categories, such
as multi-family, that have not
contacted before. She wants to
eliminate the things that have not
been been done well.
Finally, she wants to explore
the idea of forming a Professional
Women in Building Council, that
can provide mentorship and professional development for the
women of the industry - something that would have been really nice to have had way back in
1977.
