Hap-hap-happy new Year
Charbonneau!
January 1 ushers in another
year of fun and exciting events
here at the big library! We’re
wasting no time in getting started
- after, of course, taking January
1 off. After that, the first Friday,
January 3, at 6 pm, we’ll be presenting our First Friday Film. it's
a film about the X-men's Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), summoned
to Japan by an old acquaintance
and embroiled in a conflict that
forces him to confront his own
demons. And, ninjas too!
On Wednesday, January 8 at 6
pm, we have a very special guest.
87-year-old Alter Wiener, a holocaust survivor, will discuss his experiences in Poland and Germany
during and after the Second World
War. You can find out more about
mr. Wiener at his website: www.
alterwiener.com. Arrive early
for seating, as we must close the
doors when seating capacity is
reached.
On Thursday, January 9 at 6
pm, the Wilsonville Library book
Club will discuss Saving Ceecee
Honeycutt, by Beth Hoffman.
Cecelia (Cee-Cee) Honeycutt is
a twelve-year-old girl tending to
her mentally ill mother in Ohio,
when the mother is suddenly and
violently killed. A number of caring characters help nudge Ceecee
back towards life in the pages of
this bittersweet tale. Copies are
available before the meeting, so
come in and grab one today!
Saturday, January 11 at 2 pm,
come hear Sky in the road, an
inspirational folk-based pop duo
influenced by bluegrass, reggae,
rock, country, Celtic, world folk,
jazz and blues. This concert is
free.
On Wednesday, January 15 at 4
pm, The Great books Discussion
Group meets for a roundtable discussion of how modern-day issues
are reflected and illuminated by
the great Western classic books.
Free! This month’s reading is the
Book of Genesis (uh, and no, it’s
not by Phil Collins).
On monday, January 20, we’ll
be closed because it’s Martin Luther King’s birthday!
On Tuesday, January 28 at 6:30
pm, our popular History Pub series at mcmenamin’s continues
with “Soccer City: The birth and
rise of the Portland Timbers.”
Take a look back at the Timbers’
first season in 1975, a season so
successful that it earned Portland
the sobriquet ‘Soccer City USA.’
Free to all, but remember - it’s at
mcmenamin’s!
On Wednesday, January 29 at
6 pm, join us for a literary semi-
nar with Emeritus Professor John
Ehrstine, who will conduct an
eight-part class on Oregon’s own
Poet Laureate, William Stafford. born in Kansas, Stafford
became Oregon’s most celebrated
poet. How did his experiences in
Oregon shape his creative work?
What is the substance of this acclaimed poet? Join this class to
find the answers. Only $40 for all
classes, with a text available at a
discount. Call the library at 503682-2744 to sign up.
