In September, Mason announced the district would hire one SSO, thanks in part to a grant from the Tennessee Department of Education’s Safe Schools grant. After examining the budget, Mason decided to hire an additional SSO. “We made the determination that not only could we afford the additional position but it made sense to do it now,” Mason said. “This allows for a full-time officer presence at all four schools.” ACS will now have an SSO at each elementary school, one School Resource Officer at the middle school and two SROs at the high school. The SSO positions are also being filled with familiar faces. Ronnie Sewell and Fred Solang, both longtime SRO’s at Arlington High School and law enforcement officers for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, have been tapped for the jobs. “We couldn’t be more fortunate to have these two long-time and knowledgeable officers join the team,” Mason said. “They know our families, schools and community well. And they’re familiar with how ACS operates, so we think it’s going to be a very smooth transition.” Both SSOs are expected to be in place by the end of the first semester.
