Lakeland residents will be voting for a commissioner to fill the seat left vacant with the resignation of Michele Dial in January 2017. Last month, The View 38002 contacted the three candidates running for municipal office in Arlington and Lakeland. Each candidate was sent the same questions and instructions. The responses are printed in this edition starting on page 4 and are unedited, except for formatting that does not change the content or intent of the answer. At The View 38002, we believe that educating the public on the election and candidates helps individuals make informed decisions. While there certainly are many issues that are not touched upon in these questions, we encourage our readers to contact the candidates for more information on their platforms and campaigns. According to Linda Phillips, Administrator of Elections for the Shelby County Election Commission, Early Voting will be available at the Refuge Church, 9817 Huff N Puff Road in Lakeland during the following hours: May 8-12 from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm May 13 from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm May 15-19 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm May 20 from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm Election Day Voting will take place at the regular polling places from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. Lakeland Hosts Annual Tour de Lakeland & Spring Festival Story & Photo by Kim Odom, Special to THE VIEW 38002 The second annual Tour de Lakeland & Spring Festival, celebrating the City’s 40th anniversary, is scheduled for Saturday, May 13, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will feature a beautiful nature ride through Lakeland, live music, face painting, inflatables, food, a silent auction and more. The fun will include four rides (4 Mile Fun Ride, 40 Kilometer, 40 miles and 50 miles) for competitive cyclists, recreational cyclists, need-to- be cyclists, and children and grandparents. The start and finish of the bike rides and all festival events will take place at the IH Park and LAMP Pavilion, 4523 Canada Road. • Voters in ARL02-L will vote at First Baptist Church of Lakeland, 4500 Canada Road Lakeland (This is a change for this election only. Voters were mailed a notice; it affects 117 voters.) • Voters in LAK01-L will vote at First Baptist Church of Lakeland, 4500 Canada Road Lakeland • Voters in Lak02-L will vote Each ride will highlight the landmarks and natural scenery of Lakeland, such as the historic covered bridge at ChrisLeigh Farms, Garner Lake, Delta Blues Winery, Trinity Farms Equestrian Center, Memphis Propbusters, and more. All proceeds will go to fund the Lakeland Trails and Lakeland Dog Park projects. Entry fees are $35 for the longer rides and $12 for the 4 mile fun ride.
