Although electric irons existed in the late 1800s and early
1900s, many homes did not have electricity. For those without
electricity, irons heated by liquid fuel (gasoline, kerosene,
alcohol, etc.) were available. Two of such irons are the 1903
Monitor iron (left )and the Coleman kerosene iron (right; ca.
1930-1932). These irons had an attached cylinder for the liquid
fuel that was burned to provide a self-contained, continuous
source of heat. These two types of liquid-fuel irons are on
display in the kitchen area of the Rachel H. K. Burrow Museum.
