Arlington & Lakeland’s Community Newspaper Lakeland Voters Defeat Bond Initiative for School Construction By Terry Louderback After months of debate— sometimes friendly, sometimes not—3586 of Lakeland’s 8000plus registered voters cast ballots to decide whether the city would be able to issue municipal bonds for the construction of Lakeland Prep. By the end of the night on April 16, the final tally showed that 60% of those who voted rejected the bond issue. The official count (although not yet certified by the Shelby County Election Commission) was 2157 voting “No” to 1429 voting “Yes.” The defeat of the bond issue referendum does not remove the additional $0.55 in property tax approved by the Lakeland Board of Commissioners in October 2014. That increase is expected to become official when the 2015-16 Budget is passed in June, and will be retroactive to January 1, 2015, according to Lakeland City Manager Jim Atkinson. What will happen next? A post on the Lakeland School System Facebook page suggests that the goal of a complete K-12 educational system in Lakeland remains. It reads: “The LSS school board and administration are obviously disappointed with the results of the Lakeland Prep bond referendum vote as we believed our plan was in the best interest of our students and school system. Tonight’s result may impact the approach we take, but it does not deter us from our goal of being the best school system in the state and region..” May 2015 theview theview CELEBRATE. REMEMBER.
