Municipal School Board Members Elected;
Swearing In Ceremonies Set for December 2

After a nearly twoyear process, including
one nullified election,
Lakeland and Arlington
reached an important
milestone on the way to
operating
their
own
municipal school system
with the November 7
school board election.
Unofficial
results
from
the
Lakeland
Municipal School Board
Election have Kevin
Floyd, Laura Harrison,
and Kelley Hale elected to
four-year terms. Matt
Wright and Teresa Henry
were elected to two year
terms. In Arlington, all
positions
were
uncontested. The election
results are expected to be
certified by the Shelby
County
Election
Commission at its regular
meeting on November 21.
What Happens Next?
At press time, the
municipalities
had
reached agreements and
settlements with the
Shelby County Board of
Education for a quit claim
deed to the buildings
within the municipal
boundaries.
Those
agreements are expected
to be approved by the
Shelby County Board of
Commissioners
on
November 22 and will
need to be approved by
the new installed school
boards.

Board Meetings
In November, the
municipal governments of
Arlington and Lakeland
passed
separate
resolutions to authorize
the Tennessee School
Board Association to
conduct a joint search for
a superintendent for the
Arlington and Lakeland
Municipal
School
systems.
On December 2,
2013, the school boards
will
hold
separate
swearing in ceremonies
and officially take office.
Both boards are expected
to hold their first board
meeting that evening—
Arlington at 5:00 pm and
Lakeland at 7:30 pm—to
Superintendent
Lakeland School Board Members
Currently, the TSBA
is scheduled to meet with
the
Arlington
and
Lakeland School Boards
at 5:30 pm on Monday,
December 2 at Arlington
Town Hall. According to
the TSBA, interviews of
candidates are required to
be held in meetings that
are open to the public
under Tennessee’s Open
Meetings
Law.
The candidate selected is
expected to assume the
superintendent position
effective January 2014.

has launched a number of
important changes designed to
better fulfill its mission to
inform.educate.connect
the
Arlington/Lakeland/NE Shelby
County community.
With this issue, the paper
will begin to print on a monthly,
rather than bi-monthly basis.
From a news point of view, this
shorter cycle will enable us to
print features more quickly and
keep our content fresher and
more relevant for our readers.
The
redesigned
website,
Facebook updates and Twitter
feed help us keep on top of
what’s important to our
community every day.
Because of the need to
expedite delivery, with this
issue THE VIEW 38002 will
also pilot test direct mail
delivery through the US Post
Office to over 5700 addresses in
Lakeland. As a result, the total
circulation of the paper will
increase to almost 11,000
copies.
