Student Emmy Award for their Non
-Fiction Documentary entitled
“Spin.”
Competition is fierce here in the
MidSouth: out of six entries from
AHS Film and Video classes,
“Spin” was the only entry to be
nominated.
The number of nominations in
each category is based on the scores
voted by the judging panels, and
are scored on the same criteria as
the professional Emmy® Awards –
content, creativity and execution. The work is performed by
students who are currently enrolled
in high school with faculty involvement being advisory.

Arlington Community Schools
Supervisor of Instruction for grades
6-12, Faye Werner, recently detailed
two new academic offerings at
Arlington High School.
The result of input from the AP
and Honors teachers at AHS, these
programs aim to set Arlington apart
from other municipalities, Werner
commented
“This is a great time to be adding
academic programs because they
will be indicative of the goals of
Arlington Community Schools,”
Werner added.
Werner described the Advanced
Placement International Diploma ,
or APID, as a “rigorous academic
program designed to help students
develop a more global perspective
in their studies.”
Senior Julie Clark, here w/
national trophy, was inadvertently omitted from the front page
photo in our March issue.
By successfully passing at least
five Advanced Placement exams in
certain areas, and applying to one
university outside of the United
States, students can earn the APID
in addition to their regular high
school diploma.
In the 2012-13 school year, AHS
had 324 students enrolled in 21 of
the 30 possible AP courses. These
students took a total of 577 AP
Exams with 64.2% earning a passing grade of 3 or higher. This percentage is above both the TN state
percentage of 59.7% and the Global
percent of 60.9%.
There will be no additional
charge for the students beyond the
AP test fee and no additional costs
to the school for this program.
Also new for the incoming Freshman class is the Honors Academy.
While final criteria for selection
have not yet been set by the AHS
teachers and administration, Werner
explains that the idea came from the
Honors Diploma offered by the
legacy SCS.
Students in the Honors Academy
will be required to earn at least 12
credits in Honors, AP, or Dual Enrollment classes while maintaining a
certain GPA, receiving satisfactory
conduct and attendance marks, and
performing community service. A
“capstone” research project may
also be required.
Parents of incoming freshmen
were informed of the new program
at 8th grade night and application
information will be posted online.
