38002.com theview theview Page 12 April 2014 donelson elementary school Jump Rope for Heart Donelson Elementary 2nd – 5th graders participated in Jump Rope for Heart during P.E. classes February 24th – 28th learning how they can help others as well as themselves. Students and teachers raised over $4,580 for the American Heart Association. 2nd Grade Service Project ment when they delivered goodies to the firemen for their 2nd Grade Service Project. Kids Kan Week Donelson Elementary students donated 3,145 cans of food for the Mid-South Food Bank (that's 1,066 more cans than last year.) 5th grade Beta Club members collected the cans from classrooms daily and organized the cans in the gym. Mrs. Williams' 3rd Grade Class donated the most cans (252) and won a Kroger gift card for a celebration party. Mrs. Alberson's 2nd Grade Class won 2nd place with 246 cans and Mrs. K. White's 5th Grade Class won 3rd place with 232 1/2 cans. Both of those classes win a popsicle party. Multi-Cultural Week Second graders enjoyed getting a tour of the Arlington Fire Depart- In collaboration with Memphis in May, Donelson Elementary students learned about the country of Panama. Morning announcements were presented by bilingual students to introduce the student body to some simple Spanish phrases, students made beautiful molas in art class, learned how to play “leap frog” in P.E., listened and sang songs from Panama in music class, and listened to the Panamanian Folktale “Conejito” when visiting the library. All students got to visit the Panama Museum by looking at artifacts from Pink Palace (below). On Friday, staff and students dressed in “Panama's Bright Colors” by wearing jeans, brightly colored tropical shirts, and Panama Jack hats. Read Across America Week Due to inclement weather, the Read Across America week was shortened but students enjoyed wearing green shirts and reading Green Eggs and Ham on Thursday and wearing hats (top right) and reading Cat in the Hat on Friday. Students are also donated books for Youth Villages. Thanks to Parent Volunteer, Mrs. Bishop, for help with the book collection. Pastries with Parents Families enjoyed breakfast together on Friday, March 7th. The DES PTA provided donuts, milk, and juice. Community Readers and Reception Donelson Elementary welcomed 35 community readers, including Tammy Mason, Arlington Community Schools Superintendent (below), to school March 20, 2014. Fifth grade Jr. Beta Club members escorted the readers to classrooms, and the students really enjoyed their guest readers. The readers were treated to a reception in the library when they finished reading to their class.
