INTRODUCTION Learning to drive is an exciting time in a teenager’s life, but it is also critically important for you as a parent to take an active role. No matter how busy you are, the safety of your son or daughter is more important than anything else. I personally sat in an emergency room with parents whose teenager was killed in an accident. It is a moment I will never forget, and something I hope you will never have to endure. Through this guide, I want to do everything I can to help you avoid being in this devastating position. Traffic accidents are the #1 killer of teenagers every year, and 50% of teens will be involved in an accident before they graduate high school, probably in your car. Yes, you will send them to training with a professional, but it is ultimately up to you to keep your son or daughter safe by reinforcing those lessons in an effective way. This guide will help you do that in a time-saving manner through the use of short but effective videos you will watch and discuss with them. Driving is not just a physical skill, it is a mental exercise that involves decision-making, and parents need to help reinforce these skills. If your son or daughter plays a sport, you know that the coach will tell players the same things again and again in different ways in order to get them perform properly when it is game time. It is game time every time your teen gets behind the wheel. Many parents think that their teen’s driving instructor covered it, so they don’t need to do anything. Would a coach have a player practice one aspect of their sport one or two times then never worry about it again? Of course not! Driving is no different. I created the video vignettes in this guide in order to quickly and efficiently make sure I covered all the critical areas my teens needed to know or review- even if their driving instructor covered it.
