COMMUNITY tvc.dsj.org | October 10, 2017 Julio Fernandez entered into Heaven at the age of 100 on September 20 sur- rounded by his beloved wife, Dorothy, and his four children. Julio was born in Panama and emi- grated to the U. S. with his parents and siblings in 1929, settling in San Jose. He attended Saint Joseph’s Grammar School and graduated from Bellarm- ine College Preparatory in 1936. After attending Santa Clara University, he enlisted in the Army during World War II and served until the end of the war. In 1950 he married Dorothy Teresi, making their home in Santa Clara. They enjoyed an enduring love for one another lasting 66 years. Julio drove for Greyhound Bus Lines for 35 years. He was also a sacristan for 15 years at Mission Santa Clara. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with fam- ily and friends. He had an incredible sense of humor, bringing smiles to the faces of all who knew him. He was an enthusiastic stamp collector, a man with encyclopedic knowledge: there was never a question he could not answer for his children! He was a rabid Notre Dame football fan since the thirties. Julio was loyal to his family, a man of faith, and the epitome of the Bellarmine motto “A Man for Others.” Julio Fernandez (front center) at Bellarmine College Prep to receive a Bellarmine alumnus t-shirt in celebration of the school’s Founders Day, May 2017. Ministry to The Sick and Homebound Introductory Training Series Many Catholics in our diocese wish to participate in parish activities and at Mass but because of illness or infi rmity are unable to do so. Provid- ing opportunities to the hospitalized, the homebound and those in nursing homes and other health-care institu- tions for pastoral visitation and Holy Communion is an important responsi- bility of the Church as a whole as well as for individuals within each parish. The Ministry to the Sick & Home- bound depends on faith, compassion and prayerful presence. It becomes more eff ective when there is under- standing, effective communication, and familiarity with good pastoral care practices. Participants in this training series will engage in opportunities to learn, share and practice elements of this ministry to enhance their skills and resources. RISE! SF Bay Area Conferences Julio A.
