DSJ leaders comment on appointment of
new seminary rector
As reported in the Feb. 25 edition of
The Valley Catholic, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone announced
the appointment of Father Gladstone H.
Stevens, SS, as new permanent PresidentRector of St. Patrick’s Seminary & University in Menlo Park, effective June 1, 2014.
Father Stevens has been Associate
Professor of Theology and Vice Rector
at St. Patrick’s and combines theological
knowledge with religious counsel, according to the announcement.
The Seminary essentially prepares
men for diocesan priesthood and presently serves some 17 dioceses in the
western U.S., including the Diocese of
San Jose. It is the seminary of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and is staffed
and administered by Sulpician priests,
diocesan priests who belong to the Society of Saint Sulpice.
San Jose Auxiliary Bishop Thomas A.
Daly has been interim administrator there
since last fall. He said, “I have known and
worked with Father Stevens since my time
as Vocation Director in the Archdiocese.
He is truly a scholar who believes and
teaches with the Church.
“During my time as interim Rector,
Father ‘Bud’ has been of great assistance
as the Vice Rector and Dean of Men. I am
confident that he will do well in his new
position as Rector this June.
Bishop Daly added, “I am grateful for
my own formation with the Sulpician
Fathers during my years at St. Patrick’s,
and I know Father Bud and the entire
seminary faculty will continue this long
tradition of excellence in training future
priests for humble service of Christ and
his people.”
Bishop Patrick J. McGrath commented, “I am pleased with the appointment
of Father Gladstone Stevens, SS, as the
next Rector/President of St. Patrick’s
Seminary and University.
