Sister Jude Ristey, PBVM, dies
Sister Jude Ristey, PBVM, (baptismal name Mary Theresa) died Jan. 31 at the
Presentation Motherhouse in San Francisco. A native of San Jose, Sister Jude was
born July 9, 1929, and was a Sister of the Presentation for 67 years. She was the
daughter of Mina Waste and Martin Ristey, and was predeceased by her sisters
Elizabeth, Lorraine and Lavila.
Sister Jude earned her BA degree in education from the University of San Francisco, and began her 30-year ministry in Catholic education in 1949, teaching in
Presentation elementary schools in San Francisco, Oakland, San Lorenzo, Gilroy,
San Jose and Los Angeles.
In September 1980, she joined the Marriage Tribunal staff of the Archdiocese
of San Francisco as an Advocate. In 1981, she filled the same position in the newly
created Diocese of San Jose. When she retired from the Tribunal in 2003, she was a
Tribunal Manager-Case Instructor.
In 1987, she received a certificate in canon law from Catholic University in Washington, DC. In 2000, she was honored with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award from
Pope John Paul II for her service to the San Jose Diocese.
From 2004 to 2012, Sister Jude worked part-time in the Archives of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and also was a regular volunteer with the Second Harvest
Food Bank and the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

ADA in Action: Ignacio Coloma
Ignacio Coloma admits he grew up poor. “I think that being poor increased
my awareness for social justice,” says Ignacio. “My father was involved
in social justice and my mother was a very prayerful person. I guess
I take after both of them.”
Ignacio came to the United States at the age of 20 and knew that a
good education was essential to a better life. Reading a list of Ignacio’s
volunteer record is impressive. Ignacio the student has become Ignacio
the teacher. He is a graduate of the Institute for Leadership in Ministry
(ILM); a Master Catechist; works throughout Deanery Six teaching
social ministries; religious education (grades 2-8); Confirmation and
RCIA classes.
Ignacio says he receives more than he gives, that being able to serve
is a humbling experience. Ignacio states, “I am just a companion on the
journey and it is something I enjoy doing and hope to do for a long time”.
