To be Catholic is to be spiritually connected to one another in Faith wherever the Church is, and to be especially responsive to the presence of Christ in the poor.” Reverend John J. Wall, President, Catholic Extension Although the needs of our Catholic community have changed over the years, there has always been opportunity to recognize the “larger Church.” We have a long and rich heritage of helping neighbors. Here in Santa Clara County, many parish communities reach out to others with fewer resources. Across the United States, the organization that enables Catholics to reach out to each other and to share their gifts is Catholic Extension. Founded in 1905, Catholic Extension first provided funding to build churches in areas of the country that were poor and isolated – mission dioceses – and needed outside support to establish faith communities. www.valleycatholiconline.com Today, Catholic Extension’s mission has expanded to invest in people, their ministries and their churches by supporting a variety of needs. These include seminarian education, lay leadership training, youth and young adult ministries, salaries for priests and women religious, and much more. Catholic Extension currently supports 91 mission dioceses, which represent nearly half of the total number of dioceses across the United States. In these dioceses, the Catholic faith is thriving but resources are scarce. Here in California, there are four missions dioceses: Monterey, San Bernardino, Santa Rosa and Stockton. Every year, Catholic Extension provides Father Jack Wall listens as Sister Gabriella Williams, OP, explains the needs of migrant workers in the Diocese of San Bernardino. generous grants to help strengthen their ministries and programs. We are pleased to announce the addition of the Catholic Extension Endowment to our funds. Through our alliance, we hope to educate the generous people of the Diocese of San Jose about this important ministry and to grow this important grantmaking.
