Catholic Charities Day Break Cares gives
support during holiday season
By Caitlin Kerk
Christmas is a joyful time when
family and friends gather to celebrate
and count their blessings. But, for
many families caring for a loved one
with dementia or other health issues,
it can also be stressful.
Holiday travel, visits with extended
family and friends, and cold weather
can be upsetting for people with
dementia. “A change in the routine
they have come to depend on causes
additional stress and anxiety,” said
Ginger McClure, Program Supervisor
at Catholic Charities’ Day Break Cares
in Sunnyvale.
Day Break Cares Adult Day Care
centers in Sunnyvale and San Jose give
older adults a place to go and caregivers a much-needed respite so they can
work, run errands, or rest.
“Caregivers need to take care of
themselves in order to stay healthy
and continue taking care of their
loved ones. We provide a fun and safe
place for their loved ones to stay,” said
Tatiana Colon, Senior Program Director of Catholic Charities’ Older Adult
Services.
Clara Bueno, whose mother attends the Day Break Cares center in
San Jose’s Evergreen neighborhood,
is grateful for support she gets from
cch_vc_ad_10.125x6.25_press-quality.pdf
the program and the help she receives
at home. She is looking forward to
Christmas, but does wonder how her
mother will handle the long drive to
Modesto to be with family.
“It’s getting harder to take mom,”
said Bueno, whose 90-year-old mother
has lived with her and her husband for
the last 25 years. Her mother began
showing signs of dementia in 2007.
Bueno said she is fortunate she gets
help from her family. She learned how
to ask for it at the monthly support
group she attends at Day Break Cares.
“Caregivers who can’t get other family
members to help is a common thread
in the group,” she added. “I get help
and mom is well cared for. She likes
going to Day Break and they take good
care of her there.”
Catholic Charities’ Day Break Cares
offers in-home support in addition to
the Adult Day Care centers. The social
enterprise program uses an innovative
model that employs former Catholic
Charities’ clients who attend a special vocational program to become
in-home care professionals. For more

Creating Opportunity
for Self-Reliance
in our Community
After serving his country in the
military, William found himself
spiraling into homelessness, drug
abuse and incarceration.
Unable to keep a job, he lived on
the streets, was despondent, and sick
of the life he was throwing away. One
cold morning, William woke up
under a bridge and, with tears
streaming down his face, he cried out
to God… praying for His grace and
mercy. William heard that Catholic
Charities helped homeless veterans
get back on their feet. With the help
of the Mission Rebuild program he
was soon in safe and stable housing,
and secured part-time employment.
Today, he works full time, is healthy
and self-reliant. But his most precious
gift is becoming the grandfather he
always wanted to be. Your generosity
can make it possible for Catholic
Charities to work with others like
William and change lives for good.
Catholic Charities with the
support of generous donors like you
