New Starters Welcome Guide
What you need to know on your
first day
There are some things that you will need to know more or less immediately – not just what the University
expects of its employees but also what facilities and services are available to you. The following notes may
help you to get your bearings on day one.
Departmental induction
When you start work at the University,
you will be welcomed by your department
and will receive a localised induction
to help you settle into your new
environment. The length of the induction
period, and the activities involved, will
vary depending on your role and the area
that you join. To help you with orientation
you will receive an induction checklist.
After a satisfactory period of induction,
you will need to complete and return the
signed form to your Head of Department/
Service.
Staff registration
On your first day, you will need to register
with central Human Resources and obtain
your staff card (which will enable you to
access the library and, if you wish, to
enrol at the Sports and Fitness Centre).
It is important that you bring with you
the documents specified in your offer of
appointment letter.
After registering with central Human
Resources, you will need to register with
Payroll. Please refer to your contract
of employment for details of how and
when you will be paid.
New colleagues are asked to contact the
Pensions Office to discuss their eligibility
for pension scheme membership. The
Pensions team are available to answer
your queries and can be located in the
Venn Building. Call (01482 46)6300 or
email [email protected].
Parking on campus
Within your letter of appointment is a
temporary car-parking permit. If you are
travelling to work by car, please ensure
that this permit is displayed prominently
on the dashboard of your vehicle while
you are on campus. The permit will

enable you to park in any of the bays
marked ‘A’ during the first week of your
employment. Disabled parking spaces
are marked on all campus car parks.
If you wish to continue parking on campus
beyond week one, you will need an annual
permit. Full details of the parking scheme
and registration forms are available
from the Facilities Directorate on (01482
46)5084 and on the University website at
www.hull.ac.uk/facilities.
Cycling to work
If you travel to work by bicycle, there are
areas for cycle parking – most of which
are situated at the centre of the site
close to key buildings such as the library,
lecture theatres and the students’ union.
There are also a small number of undercover lock-up bicycle stores for which you
can obtain a key.
Computer users
With your contract of employment you
should have received a user ID and
password. This will allow you to access all
ICT systems at the University, including
your personal email account and storage
space.
If you have any ICT queries or problems,
please contact the relevant Service Desk.

Health and safety at work
The University recognises that safety
is an essential consideration in all its
activities. It aims to safeguard, as far as
is reasonably practicable, the health,
safety and welfare of all its staff, students
and visitors. It is important that you are
familiar with the University Health and
Safety Policy Statement and Code of
Practice.
All health and safety information,
including policies, procedures for
accident reporting, names of local health
and safety officers, and details of a
comprehensive training programme, can
be found on the main Health and Safety
Services website at www.hull.ac.uk/
safetyservices or by contacting the team
on (01482 46)5165.
In case of an accident or sudden
illness
If an accident occurs and first aid
is required, there is a list of trained
first-aiders in the internal telephone
directory and there are notices around
each building giving information on
the location of the nearest first-aider.
Alternatively, call the Report Centre on
(01482 46)5555 (Hull) or (01723 35)7266
(Scarborough) and ask for assistance. All
security personnel are qualified firstaiders and will be able to help.
Safety and security outside normal
working hours
All members of staff should report to
the Security/Report Centre on (01482
46)6868 (Hull) or (01723 35)
