New Starters Welcome Guide What you need to know on your first day There are some things that you will need to know more or less immediately – not just what the University expects of its employees but also what facilities and services are available to you. The following notes may help you to get your bearings on day one. Departmental induction When you start work at the University, you will be welcomed by your department and will receive a localised induction to help you settle into your new environment. The length of the induction period, and the activities involved, will vary depending on your role and the area that you join. To help you with orientation you will receive an induction checklist. After a satisfactory period of induction, you will need to complete and return the signed form to your Head of Department/ Service. Staff registration On your first day, you will need to register with central Human Resources and obtain your staff card (which will enable you to access the library and, if you wish, to enrol at the Sports and Fitness Centre). It is important that you bring with you the documents specified in your offer of appointment letter. After registering with central Human Resources, you will need to register with Payroll. Please refer to your contract of employment for details of how and when you will be paid. New colleagues are asked to contact the Pensions Office to discuss their eligibility for pension scheme membership. Parking on campus Within your letter of appointment is a temporary car-parking permit. If you are travelling to work by car, please ensure that this permit is displayed prominently on the dashboard of your vehicle while you are on campus. The permit will 6 | The University of Hull enable you to park in any of the bays marked ‘A’ during the first week of your employment. Disabled parking spaces are marked on all campus car parks. If you wish to continue parking on campus beyond week one, you will need an annual permit. Cycling to work If you travel to work by bicycle, there are areas for cycle parking – most of which are situated at the centre of the site close to key buildings such as the library, lecture theatres and the students’ union. There are also a small number of undercover lock-up bicycle stores for which you can obtain a key. Computer users With your contract of employment you should have received a user ID and password. This will allow you to access all ICT systems at the University, including your personal email account and storage space. Health and safety at work The University recognises that safety is an essential consideration in all its activities. It aims to safeguard, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all its staff, students and visitors. It is important that you are familiar with the University Health and Safety Policy Statement and Code of Practice. All health and safety information, including policies, procedures for accident reporting, names of local health and safety officers, and details of a comprehensive training programme, can be found on the main Health and Safety Services website at www.hull.ac.uk/ safetyservices or by contacting the team on (01482 46)5165. In case of an accident or sudden illness If an accident occurs and first aid is required, there is a list of trained first-aiders in the internal telephone directory and there are notices around each building giving information on the location of the nearest first-aider. Alternatively, call the Report Centre on (01482 46)5555 (Hull) or (01723 35)7266 (Scarborough) and ask for assistance. All security personnel are qualified firstaiders and will be able to help. Safety and security outside normal working hours All members of staff should report to the Security/Report Centre on (01482 46)6868 (Hull) or (01723 35)
