New Starters Welcome Guide OUR PROMISING FUTURE Scarborough Hull Truck Theatre Both the city of Hull and the town of Scarborough have undergone major regeneration programmes in recent years, the benefits of which can already be felt by their inhabitants. Hull’s multi-million-pound St Stephen’s development has resulted in a new retail centre, transport interchange, hotel, apartment complex and theatre, while the Urban Renaissance programme in Scarborough is focusing on the town’s social and economic regeneration. The University is playing a key role in the future of Hull with high-level involvement in major schemes including the UK City of Culture 2017 and the incoming Green Port Hull investments by Siemens and ABP. The University is represented on the board of the City of Culture, which is led by alumna Rosie Millard. Our academics will be leading on research aspects, and our staff and students will be helping to create cultural experiences as well as mobilising an 18,000-strong volunteer workforce. We have strong research partnerships with the green energy industry to help find real-world solutions, and we are also working with them to ensure our graduates fulfil the wishlists of major industry recruiters. As well as playing a key part in these changes, the University is dedicated to dealing with its own challenges – the challenges of continuing to support the local and regional community, of maintaining its reputation for effective teaching and innovative research on the national and international stage, and above all of ensuring that it continues to provide the highest standard of education for its students in a changing world. 22 | The University of Hull St Stephens Shopping Centre
