Our innovative research
Excellence in research is one of the University’s fundamental
strengths, and the institution is home to world-leading
authorities on a range of subjects within the arts, business,
education, health and social care, medicine, social sciences,
science and technology. Many of our academic staff work in
partnership with external bodies and industry.
The University was delighted to have two entries in Eureka UK –
a Universities UK publication highlighting ‘100 discoveries and
developments in UK universities that have changed the world’.
The Department of Chemistry was recognised for producing
the first commercially viable liquid-crystal materials during the
1970s, while the other accolade acknowledged Dr Christian
Langton’s bone density scanner, which has revolutionised the
detection of osteoporosis.
We are continually enhancing our reputation for pioneering
research, some of it positively life-changing. Notable recent
developments would include the following.

Our newly established Centre for Adaptive Science and
Sustainability helps businesses, governments and societies
adapt to the impacts of changes in the areas of climate, energy
and natural resources. It coordinates the University’s broad
expertise in the environmental sector and will provide key
skills and academic expertise to the large-scale wind turbine
