New Starters Welcome Guide Larkin statue in Paragon Station Our innovative research Excellence in research is one of the University’s fundamental strengths, and the institution is home to world-leading authorities on a range of subjects within the arts, business, education, health and social care, medicine, social sciences, science and technology. Many of our academic staff work in partnership with external bodies and industry. The University was delighted to have two entries in Eureka UK – a Universities UK publication highlighting ‘100 discoveries and developments in UK universities that have changed the world’. The Department of Chemistry was recognised for producing the first commercially viable liquid-crystal materials during the 1970s, while the other accolade acknowledged Dr Christian Langton’s bone density scanner, which has revolutionised the detection of osteoporosis. We are continually enhancing our reputation for pioneering research, some of it positively life-changing. Notable recent developments would include the following. Liquid Crystal Cutting-edge biomedical research in the Allam Building Our newly established Centre for Adaptive Science and Sustainability helps businesses, governments and societies adapt to the impacts of changes in the areas of climate, energy and natural resources. It coordinates the University’s broad expertise in the environmental sector and will provide key skills and academic expertise to the large-scale wind turbine manufacturing
