The truth about Hair Extensions June, 2014 | Page 3
Prevention
One of the best ways to ensure minimum damage and side effects of hair extensions is to
select the best suited extension material, attachment technique and products. This is possible by
seeking help from a trained professional only. In order to avoid complications of hair loss, the
following actions must be ensured:
Length
It must be ensured that applied hair extensions’ length should not be longer than twice the
length of natural hair. This will prevent sustained tension on natural hair.
Aligning
For any hair extension technique, it needs to be ensured that the cuticles of the applied
hair are in the same direction as that of natural hair. This simple but crucial application technique
helps prevent loss of shine, hair tangling and matting. If the extensions are aligned with natural
hair, from root to the tip, brushing will be a lot easier.
Long-term Use
The use of hair extensions for an excessively long period is not recommended. The same
increases risks of various scalp diseases and hair loss. Prolonged use therefore, needs to be
avoided.
