The Hard Truth about Hair Extensions
Introduction
The popularity of hair extensions among women has increased worldwide. They are not
only viewed as fashion statements but also allow a quick and easy way to achieve drastic
makeovers. These products are available widely, ranging from conventional retail stores to
dedicated salons and online stores. While a number of women believe that hair extensions are a
safe addition to their fashion accessories; there are a few complications associated with these
products which one needs to be aware of.
Side-Effects
Firstly, the expansion in hair extensions market is not free from risks, given the fact that
there are increasingly occurring cases of traction alopecia. In addition, hair dressing induced
scalp diseases are also on the rise which further complicates the use of hair extensions. Hair
extensions are mostly projected to be free from any side effects. In real, a significantly common
side effect associated with these products is hair matting which commonly occurs because of
concomitant acute telogen effluvium.
Hair Loss
Women who suffer from such side effects often complain of excessive hair loss within a
week or two after the hair extensions’ application. This hair loss is actually caused due to the loss
of those natural tufts of hair that have been attached to extensions. In a number of such cases, the
same is attributed to small patches of alopecic areata. For those who suffer from such symptoms,
immediate medical help is advised so as to conduct a thorough dermal evaluation of the scalp.
One also needs to be sure if the same is a non-scarring hair loss or one with yellow dots. For the
latter, the chances of alopecia areata are high.
Hair Matting
Another equally alarming side effect associated with hair extensions is that of severe
matting. This is mostly caused by the extensions’ glue which tends to prevent the normal
shedding of hair. In a number of cases, hair loss is also induced by excessive tension on the
natural hair caused due to extension weight. What happens is that the natural hair shaft loosens
from its ostium, which may result in chronic follicular inflammation and consequent hair loss.
