He had a love of gardening , woodworking and porcelain , combined with a particular affection for Swaledale : apart from enjoying the scenery , this also drew him on to researching population movements in the valley and presenting a paper to the local history society on the subject . A man of considerable energy , drive and curiosity about other people and kind with it ; widely travelled in his work and taking seriously , in an unobtrusive way , a concern for service in public life . Married Selina Townley in 1966 who survives him , together with their son .

Joined National Trust in Vancouver , then Royal Trust / Royal Bank of Canada in Toronto , retiring in 2001 as head of global securities services . Under his leadership custody assets had grown from $ 30 billion to over $ 1 trillion . For many years he was a director of the industry organization , Canadian Depository for Securities , and was also Vice Chairman of the Canadian Markets Association : in 2001 , he was presented with a lifetime achievement award for his exemplary services to the global custody industry . A keen cricketer and an active member of the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club . Lecturer in Archaeology ANU Department of Classics , Canberra , 1965-8 , University of Manchester 1969 and then reader in Classical Archaeology University of Edinburgh
1969-78 ; reader in Classical Archaeology , University of Oxford 1979 . He was Director of the Institute of Archaeology ( 1990-93 ), chaired the Sub-Faculty of Archaeology , and was instrumental in the creation of the BA in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History . Fellow and Sub- Warden of Merton College . He was a world expert on the study of ancient Greek architecture : his book Ancient Greek Architects at Work : Problems of Structure and Design remains a classic , while The Architectural Development of the Greek Stoa shows his profound understanding of the subject . All his publications were enhanced by his own outstanding drawings and reconstructions . He taught a large number of students at all levels and was much appreciated for his dedication and great care . He participated in many important excavations in Greece and Turkey : his constructive habit of worrying away at problems till a solution was found , and his avoidance of sweeping generalisations and of easy solutions , mark his scholarship out as being in the first rank . Married Mary Burness in 1969 , who survives him with their daughter and son .
