No . 130 The Trusty Servant older opposition [ See match report in ‘ Wiccamica ’ above ]. An intraclub match brought together OW cricketers from across four decades . The senior team of the OWCC , the self-styled ‘ Legends ’, brought the season to a close with a single off the last ball of their one match , to tie the game against the Sons of Bacchus and head to the historic Bat and Ball pub on Broadhalfpenny Down to watch the sun set with socially distanced pint in hand .
This was Rupert Morton ’ s ( B , 96-01 ) last season as Secretary of the OWCC , after 11 years in the role . The agility of the Club ’ s response to the lifting of restrictions is a mark of the quality of the Committee that he has painstakingly put together in that time . His has been a huge effort , over many hundreds of hours , to recruit teams , deal with club admin and finances , and creatively suggest new ways in which OW cricket can be made accessible to the greatest number possible , and more familyfriendly . He is succeeded by Ed Roe ( Coll , 07-12 ).
OWCC looks forward to capturing the spirit of 2020 next season , now that the experience of nearly missing a summer of cricket has reminded its members of the incredible good fortune they enjoy in having access to two grounds that rank among the most beautiful in the country , to play a form of friendly cricket in which the spirit of the game remains as important as the result . Anyone wishing to join the club database , through which they can access updates on club events and can sign up for fixtures , should email owcc2020 @ gmail . com .
Tennis , Rackets etc
Despite a truncated season , the OW rackets fraternity built on last year ’ s Noel Bruce success to claim yet more silverware , principally thanks to a tremendous performance by CH Portz ( H , 05-10 ) in the Amateur Singles . Honourable mention for MA Bailey ( A , 00-05 ) as a US Open 2020 Doubles Finalist and potential World Doubles Challenger , should the pandemic kindly abate to allow the playing of their pre-challenge eliminator .
Football Tom Goulding ( G , 05-10 ) reports :
The continuation of organised team sport ( until the time of writing at least , in mid-October ) has allowed the Old Wykehamist Football Club community to burn bright despite the
pandemic , with the Arthurian League restarting as usual from September , along with certain new matchday protocols to maintain distancing off the pitch .
