From the Director Winchester College Society News
There has been a change in the Win Coll Soc offices : we bade farewell to Alex Roe ( G , 72-75 ) in May this year . Patrick Walker ( I , 65-70 ) stood in as Acting Director over the summer and Christopher Normand ( F , 76-81 ) arrived as the new Director at the beginning of Short Half .
Alex had been Director since 2014 and we will remember him for his enthusiastic hosting of many a good party ( a concept that seems to have departed along with Alex !) and for his concise written prose . That prose is not absent from these pages , for , like his predecessors , Alex has failed to extract himself completely from Winchester and continues to hunt down and write up the OW obituaries that fill the preceding pages as well as overseeing production of The Trusty Servant .
The fairly new Director writes : As I write this , I feel a bit like a News Quiz contestant on election night . Both occur on a Thursday , but the episode won ’ t be broadcast until Friday night and yet the programme has to be relevant whatever the outcome of the polls . Likewise , I have no idea what position we will be in by the time The Trusty Servant is published . It is remotely possible that we will be starting to plan real events with real people attending , although I fear that the outcome of the polls will favour some sort of lockdown , where we make the most of our new-found skills with camera and computer .
I can , however , predict with some confidence that the College will be functioning and teaching as it has
Christopher Normand ( F , 76-81 )
done successfully and with barely a check over the last six months . Issue 129 gave an insight into teaching under lockdown , and this practice continued throughout Cloister Time . The beginning of Short Half was heralded by quarantine for those pupils who travelled from overseas . It began with bubbles ( each House forming a bubble ) combined with continued remote learning , and progressed after two weeks into a recognisable form of up-to-books teaching . Hybrid teaching , where a live class can combine with remote pupils , has been designed and practised . The return after Leave-out will be a much swifter affair , with every man in the school being tested before being allowed up to house . The whole school will be fully operational within five days of the end of Leaveout .
With the possibility of further restrictions to our social and working activities in the balance , I hesitate before saying that I hope to see many of you soon . We will continue to educate and inform you all with the excellent digital material that the school has been able to produce .
