For many years he was a director of the industry organization , Canadian Depository for Securities , and was also Vice Chairman of the Canadian Markets Association : in 2001 , he was presented with a lifetime achievement award for his exemplary services to the global custody industry . He was Director of the Institute of Archaeology ( 1990-93 ), chaired the Sub-Faculty of Archaeology , and was instrumental in the creation of the BA in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History . Fellow and Sub- Warden of Merton College . He was a world expert on the study of ancient Greek architecture : his book Ancient Greek Architects at Work : Problems of Structure and Design remains a classic , while The Architectural Development of the Greek Stoa shows his profound understanding of the subject . All his publications were enhanced by his own outstanding drawings and reconstructions . He taught a large number of students at all levels and was much appreciated for his dedication and great care . He participated in many important excavations in Greece and Turkey : his constructive habit of worrying away at problems till a solution was found , and his avoidance of sweeping generalisations and of easy solutions , mark his scholarship out as being in the first rank .
