Over 15 th /16 th June 2019, much to my surprise, I completed the ‘Expert’ event in 23 hours 31 mins 46 secs, beating over a third of the field of 734. I wish I had done more tolling at school! ratracethewall.co.uk Obiter dicta Chaloner Chute (E, 62-67) reports: A heads up to all OWs. Following a career in education and managing community projects here and overseas, I was diagnosed in 2015 with prostate cancer – one in eight men get it, and 11,000 die each year – and I resolved to make a documentary film about it: the first ever by a patient on the journey; perhaps my last community project and a first for me! My son Jack is a professional film-maker. We have now finished the film – it is light-hearted, seasoned with some of the UK’s and indeed the world’s top specialists in the field. Its main message is to encourage men and their partners to talk about it and to live as well as possible while recovering from such a diagnosis. Early diagnosis equals best chance of full recovery. Any worrying signs, your GP is the first port of call. To view the film please email chalonerc@ gmail.com. Alasdair Robertson (F, 07-12) describes a challenge he is about to undertake: Three years ago, a miscommunication with my climbing partner resulted in me falling 40 feet down the Avon Gorge and breaking my back and both feet. Despite shards of bone poking into my spinal column, my central nervous system was undamaged. I had to spend a couple of months consigned to a bed or a wheelchair, during which I gained a little bit of perspective on how hard life is for sufferers of spinal damage. Having had time to recover, I was keen to raise money for Spinal Research so that in future more people are able to be healed. To that end, I am hiking from Snowdon, via Scafell Pike, to Ben Nevis - nearly 23 500 miles. I am carrying everything I need with me and camping wherever possible. www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/backontrack3peaks On 26 th June a plaque was unveiled by English Heritage at 21 Portland Place, Marylebone in memory of Sir Arthur Pearson (D, 1880-84), founder of The Daily Express and The Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Care Committee, later renamed St Dunstan’s and now known as Blind Veterans UK).
