Patrick Stanley Winton King Maclure (I, 52-57; Secretary of Wykehamist Society, 88-04; Aide to the Warden and Headmaster, 04-14): died 28.9.2019. Brother of JRSM (I, 47-52), uncle of JMM (K, 79-83), TSM (K, 81-86), GSM (K, 83-88) and SPIM (K, 88-91). Co Prae, VI; KRRC (later 2nd Green Jackets) 1958-60, 2 Lt N Ireland; assistant master, Horris Hill School 1960-78, also Bursar from 1965-78; Bursar, Downe House School 1979-88; director, Astron Appointments 1988-89; Secretary, Wykehamist Society 1988-2004; director, Friends of Winchester College 1989-2004, Aide to Warden and Headmaster 2004-14. A loyal servant of the school and a good friend and mentor to all at Win Coll Soc. See Charles Sinclair’s appreciation above. Peter John Gwyn (Co Ro, 65-76): died 27.3.2019. Born in India where his father was Headmaster of Aitchison College; educated at Peter Symonds and Bristol University, where his love of History took root. He came to Winchester in 1965, acting as the College Archivist and teaching History: his tutorials are remembered by many. He started Bridge Society and presided over the players with Tarpa his long-haired retriever, tea and jaffa cakes in Meadow House. House Tutor of Chawker’s. Founded Sen Club, which played against local villages. He resigned as Archivist because he deplored the decision to sell the Malory Manuscript: he objected to the way the decision had been made, the reasoning behind the decision, and the price. He moved to Oxford and was Bowra Fellow at Wadham College 1981-82. He took up the invitation to write about Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, published as The King’s Cardinal, described as the most important book on Tudor history. He spent the last 30 years of his life in south-west France, where he enjoyed gardening. He was an historian, gardener, teacher and a canny cricketer, a friend to young and old alike. A tribute to his time as Archivist appeared in The Wykehamist 1250 in 1976. Angus James Watson (Master of Music, 70-83): died 9.09.2019. Father of NJW (A, 72-76) and AJW (K, 74-78). Born in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. His parents had been sent by the Church Missionary Society to work in hospitals in Behai and Kunming, before finally returning to England in 1939. Studied at RCM 1950-1, under violinist Albert Sammons, and also conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. Music scholarship to Magdalene College, 1951-54. MA, MusB, President CU Music Club. Director of Music at Stowe School 1960-70. Master of Music and Director Winchester Music Club 1970-83. First Dean of the School of Music, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts 1984-89. Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School 1990- 94. Since retirement, an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, with extensive tours abroad. 24 Served on Council of the National Youth Orchestra and was Foundation President, Music Masters and Mistresses Association. Published Beethoven’s Chamber Music in Context 2010. Married 1955 Alison Maude, who survives him together with 3 sons and a daughter. See Nick Wilks’ appreciation above. Matthew Gavin Armstrong (Co Ro, 98-03): died 11.8.2019. Hutton GS, New Coll, MA Medieval and Modern languages, PGCE; Birkbeck College London, MA in Renaissance Studies and BA in English Literature. Teacher at Lancing 1994-97. Business Analyst McKinsey & Co 1997-98. Then French, German and B-ladder div don at Win Coll, tutor in Chawker’s, and MiC hockey, for whom Stretch Pot was named. After Win Coll, he was Head of English, Director of Studies and Assistant Headmaster External Relations at Charterhouse 2003-13 and then Headmaster, The King’s School Worcester from 2013. Matthew’s vision was to ensure that pupils left King’s curious about the world, excited to learn and able to adapt to future changes. Member of the Worcester Cathedral Council and a supporter of the clergy and choir. Died tragically after a climbing accident in Chamonix. Uncompromising about education yet easy-going, generous and loyal to his friends, of which he made many. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Married Catherine (Kate) Shuttleworth in March 2007, who survives him. Elaine Robinson, née Outhwaite (Co Ro, 00-07): died 3.9.2019. Educated West Kirby Girls’ Grammar School. Bangor University College of North Wales (1964-67) BA Psychology. Worked as Clinical Psychologist 1967-70 in hospitals and for the Dyslexia Institute including teaching in HM Prison in Winchester and Sparsholt College. In the early 1990s she was asked by James Sabben-Clare to assess and teach boys with specific learning difficulties. This
