Win Coll was left a much poorer
place when Patrick Maclure died on
28 th September, aged 80. All of us at
Win Coll Soc will miss him terribly
- for his charm, friendliness, advice
(frequently proffered) and yellow
corduroys. Above all, he was, in
Ralph Townsend’s words, the fount of
all knowledge. Already, I have heard
it said, ‘Patrick would have known
the answer to that.’ RIP.

For the last eight years Col
Christopher Van der Noot has acted
as Obituarist for The Trusty Servant,
diligently recording the passing of
many hundreds of OWs to a Better
Place. It is a source of pride that all
OWs receive an obituary: sometimes
this has required a considerable
degree of detective work and patience
on Christopher’s part. On behalf of
Win Coll Soc and OWs in general I
would like to record our thanks for
his generosity in devoting so much
time and expertise to this task.
Every few years we conduct a survey
of our readership. This magazine
is just part of the overall school
communications programme, which
also includes our annual report the
Wykeham Journal (a rather different
beast, to excuse the pun) and our
newly-redesigned websites. At present,
it is primarily directed towards OWs.
We would very much welcome any
thoughts about its content, relevance,
style and design from readers young
32
and old and whether we should
aim to broaden its appeal. Answers
on a postcard or even by email to
[email protected] would be greatly
welcomed. Please also let us know if
you would rather receive The Trusty
Servant by electronic means.
Directors needed
The College has a number of trading
subsidiaries. The most important
of these is the Winchester College
Trading Company, through which
we place most of the Winchester
College Enterprises business. It
is a requirement of the Charity
Commission that we have some
independent directors on the board
and we are looking for successors
to the current incumbents. Anyone
interested in taking on this not
particularly time-consuming position
should please contact Steven Little
the Bursar for further details. spl@

OW Drinks Reception
We are holding a reception for OWs
of all ages at Merchant Taylors’
Hall on Wednesday 26 th February
2020. These drinks events were
discontinued four years ago because
of a lack of support, in part caused
by the alternative attractions of the
‘Years-on’ reunions and the six house
150 th -anniversary celebration dinners.
It would be very good if we were able
to revert to a huge turnout.
