for the 25 th anniversary Arrow trophy,
sailing against old boys from 26 other
schools in Sunsail boats. Alastair Hall,
who had helmed our boat for many years,
retired as helm after last year’s event and
has been succeeded by James Pinder. Our
Jun Man was TX Finney and our Sen
Man Richard Darley. The forecast storms
did not arrive and we had good racing
on both days. We sailed well but not well
enough to claim a trophy finishing 6 out
of 27. The crew was David Anderson,
Richard Darley, James Pinder (helm),
Duncan Byatt, Alastair Morley (who
was in the winning Belvidere crew), Tim
Wolfe-Barry, James Shepherd, Archie
Chitty, TX Finney, Oli Gordon and
Michael Coffin.
The 2018 year will end with our AGM
and dinner at the Royal Ocean racing
Club on Tuesday 27 th November. All
WSC members are encouraged to come.

ages and we are always looking for

OWTC
OWTC is recruiting
The days are closing in and the dry
summer days are long forgotten, which
means the cross- country season is upon
us: OWTC is, as ever, recruiting! OWTC
is agnostic about its members’ talent,
age, and speed. All the club requests is a
healthy dose of enthusiasm for running
through muddy English terrain in English
weather and, less critically, for a post-
race pint.
Our big race is the Alumni Race on
Wimbledon Common, this year on
Saturday 15 th December. We will have
runners at the sharp end of proceedings
and V65s doing battle at the back - and
runners spread out in between. We also
have a regular fixture against the school
in the spring. Any interested runners

Double buggy world marathon attempt
David Bruce (K, 98-03) is attempting
to set a new double-buggy world record
at the Abingdon Marathon on 21 st
October 2018. The current record
stands at a nifty 3:09, but he has running

talent and grit galore (multiple Sen
victories, Blues appearances and a
victory in the Blues match). His son
and daughter, Daniel and Emilia, have
also previously held the double-buggy
world record (since broken) - pushed
by David’s wife, Jess. We will report
back in the next edition. He is also
raising funds for the Bristol Children’s
Hospital, so please support David by

Obiter dicta
ART Boucher (D, 95-00) is raising
money for Parkinson’s UK. He has been
doing lots of charity runs to raise money
for the charity in memory of Rosie
Williams (Spanish don, 82-13): his aim is
to raise £3000.
Shaun Hullis (Co Ro, 02-08) reports:
I was privileged to be invited to lecture
in Fontanellato, between Piacenza and
Parma, at a conference held for the San
Martino Trust on the 75th anniversary of
the 1943 Italian Armistice. My talk was
on the tunnel dug by, amongst others,
AD ‘Donny’ Mackenzie (B, 28-33),
whose memorial near Pontedellolio
I visited the next day. The locals are
immensely proud of ‘Capitano Mak’, and
plan to hold a commemorative event on
the weekend of 5 th -6 th October 2019, the
75 th anniversary of his death in action,
leading Italian partisans fighting behind
German lines.
