1981. He then took up his career as
a teacher, first at Cranleigh School
1981-86 before moving to St Edward’s
School, Oxford 1987-91. He then
became Head of Mathematics at King’s
School, Gloucester 1991-96 and then
finally as Head of Mathematics at
Portsmouth Grammar School 1996-
2010. He was an outstanding teacher of
Mathematics – he made the subject so
clear that it seemed as though he was
simply opening doors to sunlit gardens.
He inspired pupils to represent the
UK in the International Mathematics
Olympiad. As a Christian who
followed the doctrine of the Anglican
Orthodox Church, he attended many
Christian retreats. He is survived by his
sister.
Gervase Richard Markham
(Coll, 91-96): died 27.7.2018.
Grandson of GWM (B, 24-29) and son
of FCTM (K, 63-67). 3rd generation of
Wykehamists father to son. Scholarship,
University College, Oxford, I
Computation 2001. He became a
Christian at Oxford in 1998. He was
Head of Production at Oxygen 107.9
FM, the first student radio station in the
country with a full FM Licence. He was
diagnosed in 2001 with adenoid cystic
carcinoma, a rare salivary-gland cancer.
He worked for the Mozilla project, a
global non-profit dedicated to ensuring
that the Internet remains a global
public resource, open and accessible to
all. He won a Google/O’Reilly Open
Source Award for Best Community
Activist in 2006. He attended Oak Hill
Theological College, with the aim of
knowing Jesus better and being more
useful at his church rather than as a
step towards ordination, achieving a
DipHE (Middlesex) 2009 in Theological
and Pastoral Studies. Married 2010
Ruth Rotter, who survives him with
their three sons.

Naresh Peter Shenoy Verlander
(E, 02-04): died 20.7.2018. Kings
College, London, Computer Sciences
2004-2006, Heythrop College 2006-09,
Law School 2010-11. He had multiple
talents and a wide array of interests.
Whilst studying he became the
Metropolitan Police’s youngest special
constable to be promoted sergeant.
He was a firearms officer, conducting
dawn raids on highly dangerous gangs
in London. He became the Photo Editor
of London Student with a readership of
120,000. He captured the 2004 Boxing
Day tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
He then went to RMA Sandhurst
2011-12. Commissioned into the
Royal Military Police. He completed
the Special Investigations Branch
course and was involved in covert
operations. By the time that he left
the Army in 2015 he had reached the
rank of Captain. Before moving back
to New York in 2015 he completed the
Cambridge University Judge Business
School financial-management course.
In New York he first worked for IBM
as an IT consultant. From 2016 he
volunteered with the Atlantic Steamer
Fire Company as a fire-fighter and a
member of their dive-rescue team. In
May 2018 he was awarded for being the
most active and responsive fire-fighter
in the team. At his funeral his fellow
fire-fighters hung a huge flag for him
from the ladders of the fire engines as
a mark of respect. Throughout his life
his selfless volunteering and willingness
to put his own life at risk to help others
touched the hearts of many. Within
his short time, he accomplished many
things and his life experience was
exceptionally rich. He is survived by his
mother and father.
