the World Bank in Washington in
1972. His seminal paper on health
economics was typical of his output: it
was compelling reading and changed
the course of World Bank policy in this
area. He finally returned to Cambridge
and eagerly followed developments in
subjects as diverse as cognitive science
and the history of espionage. He re-

and mutual loyalty. He first worked
for Coopers and then he learnt
everything about trading from David
Hurtford Jones. He then worked for
Mayer Newman and in 1992 he set
up his own scrap-trading company
Newman Clarkson & Co Ltd, dealing
with the German Battle Fleet at Scapa
Flow, Spitfires in Russia, T34 Tanks
and a trainload of electrical motors
from a dismantled weapons factory in
Mongolia, and also the breaking up
for scrap of old Russian submarines in
Finland. And throughout the time he
was racing and rallying cars including
the London-to-Mexico Rally. For the
last 20 years he traded everywhere in
the world from his home in East Sussex.
He was ‘a legend in the scrap industry’.
