The Trusty Servant in the Cricketer Cup. English Schools Cricket XI 1979. Magdalene College, Cambridge. History 2( 2), BA( Hons) 1982. He played Cricket for Cambridge 1980-83 and for the Combined Oxford and Cambridge side in the Benson and Hedges competition. He was Captain of the Arabs Cricket Club in 2016. He first taught at St Andrew’ s, Turi in Kenya 1983-85. He then taught at Tonbridge 1985-89 before three years head-hunting in the City. He then taught at Eton 1992-98 where he was a lively contributor both on and off the playing fields. He was then appointed Headmaster at Caldicott, where he remained for 19 years until serious illness forced his early retirement. He increased the number of pupils and was shrewdly able to combine the traditional and the modern aspects of preparatory school life. So much was changed as his ambitions for the school were woven into its very fabric. He served Caldicott with distinction. Together as a strong husband-and-wife team at the centre of the school community, he and Antonia radiated a warmth which made all the boys feel that Caldicott was their extended family. He was a Governor of Harrow School and was chosen by Anthony Seldon to be a fellow of Wellington College. He was consulted by other prep schools about the importance of public relations. He was a long-term member of the Arundel Castle Ground Foundation and had recently been appointed chairman, illness preventing him from chairing more than one meeting. He hosted three exceptional dinners at Caldicott to raise money for young cricketers, first in the Hlengisa Township outside Cape Town, subsequently for those in Barbados and for those who come, regularly, from London boroughs to play at Arundel under the auspices of the Arundel Castle Ground Foundation. He played an active role in getting‘ cricket on the ice’ off the ground at St Moritz. He will be remembered with considerable affection for his high principles, his wish to be of service, his unselfish resilience, his enjoyment of life and his easy rapport with so many at all levels. Married 1990 Antonia Ross in Chichester Cathedral, who survives him with their daughter and two sons.
Henry John Goulding( F, 80-85): died 19.5.2017. He spent four years at Edinburgh University and two years at Law School before joining Farrer & Co in 1993. The traits that made him an exceptional lawyer were his deeply-held moral purpose and his humanity. He was an inspirational leader of the firm’ s property department. He was appointed MVO by the Queen in recognition of his work for the Sandringham Estate and the Duchy of Lancaster. He brought his enthusiasm as well as his humour to his life as a solicitor – an uncommon ability. At partners’ meetings his insightful contributions frequently allowed difficult debates to be resolved with clarity and good sense. He was a passionate and expert bird-watcher. He is survived by his wife Lucy and their two daughters and a son.
Harry Michael Ullman( K, 93-98): died on 16.5.2017 by his own hand after a long battle with severe depression. Before coming to Winchester he was ill with leukaemia but he received a matched donation and recovered. In the school he was remembered as gentle and sweet-natured, but he was forgetful: his late-night toast and set off the fire alarm, causing the whole building to be evacuated. He studied Architecture at Newcastle and Edinburgh Universities. He then worked as an architect in a number of practices and more recently on his own. He had enormous attention to detail – his paintings and sketches always showed meticulous craftsmanship. He had a great love of history. He is survived by his mother and his brother, and is particularly missed by his nephews.
