Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP (H, 93-98)
was appointed Chancellor of the
Exchequer on 13 th February 2020. He
is the sixth OW Chancellor, following
Sir Geoffrey Howe (E, 40-45) 1979-83,
Hugh Gaitskell (H, 19-24) 1950-51, Sir
Stafford Cripps (A, 1901-07) 1947-50,

29) 1868-73, and Henry Addington
(Commoners, 1769-73) 1801-04.

in Epidemiology and Therapeutics in
the Department of Psychosis Studies,

Worshipful Company of Paviors in
March 2020.

up post as Vice Chair of HMC

Principal of Monkton Combe School.

Awards
Stephen Martin (D, 53-58) was
awarded the OBE in the 2002 New
Year’s Honours, five years after his
elder brother Tom (D, 49-54) received
the same honour. They have both
spent their lives developing their
family business ARCO, whilst being
much involved in the community of
Hull and East Yorkshire. Tom’s son
Thomas (D, 77-82) is now chairman
and, like his father, has been a High
Sheriff of East Yorkshire.
James Weeks (Coll, 91-96) and Geoff
Hannan (A, 85-90) scooped an
Ivor Novello Composer Award for
their pieces ‘Leafleoht’ and ‘Pocket
Universe’ respectively. Geoff does
not think anyone noticed that the
evening was a little Wykehamist-
heavy.
Books
OWs are encouraged to inform us
of all their publications. We are of
course particularly interested in those
of a biographical nature which include
reminiscences of the school and life at Win
Coll.
In January 2020, Toby Purser (G,
87-92) was appointed Head of
Conducting at the Royal College of
Music, London.
The Revd Dr Simon Thorn (D,
79-84; Co Ro, 92-93 & 15-19) is now
Assistant Curate (Associate Minister)
of St Mary the Virgin with St Cross
and St Peter in the East, Oxford.
Stephen Bann (Coll,
55-60) has published
Scenes and Traces of
the English Civil War.
Based on his lectures
as Slade Professor
of History of Art at
Cambridge in 2017,
this work examines
the way in which the memory of
the Civil War has been perpetuated
25
visually over two-and-a-half centuries.
Winchester Cathedral figures as a
site of contemporary vandalism, as
does the story of the silver Capell
Cup, acquired by the College through
the gift of two sons of an executed
Royalist commander. Price £40;
publication May 2020;
ISBN 978-1789142280.
David Critchley
(B, 68-73) reports: My
articles ‘Heaven on
Earth: Sir Robert
Lorimer and Stowe
School Chapel
1926-2’ and ‘The
Headmaster and
the Architect: J F
Roxburgh, J F Matthew and Stowe
School War Memorial’ appeared
in Records of Buckinghamshire
vol 59 (2019). The former is the
first in-depth treatment of Stowe
Chapel, apparently the third largest
commission undertaken by Lorimer,
at that time Scotland’s premier
architect.
Alastair McKay (I,
77-81) has written
Bridgebuilding:
Making Peace
with Conflict in the
Church, to address
a prevailing culture
of niceness within
churches which can lead to conflict-
avoidance and denial. Drawing on
practical theology, conflict theory and
experience, it helps Christians to find
more fruitful ways of engaging with
tensions and conflicts in church life,
and beyond. The book is enriched
by dialogues with a dozen diverse
peacemakers and pastors to bring
added depth and insight.
