DHWI Healthy Harvest Fun Walk/5K Run &
Diabetes Expo a success
The sixth annual Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute
(DHWI) Healthy Harvest Fun Walk/5K Run & Diabetes Expo,
held October 31, brought together supporters to raise awareness
and generate funding for the Diabetes Health and Wellness
Institute at Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center. The
event received support from many generous sponsors, including MedAssets, which served as presenting sponsor for the fifth consecutive year, and
founding sponsor, OTSL Charities, and raised
more than $140,000 for the Institute’s diabetes
self-management and wellness programs, education
initiatives and outreach projects.
Demond Fernandez, WFAA Channel 8 reporter, served as the
event emcee, and participants enjoyed fresh fruit and vegetables
provided by Freshpoint and the Alon USA Farm Stand and
line dancing.
Founded in 2010, DHWI is a collaboration between Baylor
8
Health Care System and the City of Dallas, to provide access to
quality health care and disease prevention services to southern
Dallas. Residents in surrounding ZIP codes are three-times more
likely to die from diabetes compared to those living in
Dallas. Prior to DHWI’s opening, the area lacked services that are essential to living healthy, such as
access to doctors’ offices or hospitals, healthy food
options and grocery stores, exercise programs, and
affordable transportation.
Providing access to a health care team, including
a physician, nurses, care coordinators and diabetes
education specialists, DHWI offers a simple yet innovative approach to combating diabetes and has woven itself into
the culture of this community to impact societal change.
