MEET THE OFFICERS
PRESIDENT
The Torch: What are you most excited for this upcoming year (JCL-wise)?
MS: Convention is always one of the highlights of my year. This one’s going to be a little bittersweet since it’s my last year in COJCL, but I’ll treasure it even more because of that!
The Torch: Favorite Latin quote/motto?
MS: “Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit” (“Perhaps one day it will even help to remember these things”) from the Aeneid.
The Torch: Any quirkly or interesting facts about yourself, hobbies, relations, etc.?
MS: I love politics! I’m also hoping to double-major in classics and international relations and go on to practice human rights law.
Meet our 2016-2017 President, Mary-Claire Spurgin, from LIberty Common High School
The Torch: What first sparked your interest in JCL?
MS: During my sophomore year, I was on the Latin Student Problems Tumblr when I kept seeing posts about JCL, which I had never heard of. I decided to look into it, and the more I heard about it, the more fun it sounded! I asked my Latin teacher if I could start a chapter at Liberty and the rest just came together.
The Torch: What are your goals this year for the COJCL?
MS: I would love to see more schools with classics programs join COJCL so we can continue to grow. Additionally, I’m hoping to run some more events during the year before convention!
