Want Nothing Morethan Christ

eing a counselor at Camp Tejas
is always the best week of my
year. It’s dif?cult to describe,
but there is something truly amazing
about seeing ?rst hand the work that
Christ is doing in the hearts of young
children in addition to realizing and
experiencing the transforming work
that He’s doing in my own heart. Work
that He does through incredibly powerful and compelling testimonies from
Camp Tejas staff members, awesome
sermons, heart ?lled worship, quality
time in His Word, authentic prayer,
and even the pure joy that comes from
just being a kid again.
This isn’t to say that the amazing
pool, rock wall, zip-lines, water trapeze, mud games, hayrides, cup stacking, and the great (yes, great) food
don’t add to the experience…because
they do! In fact, you could argue that
those and a host of other activities in
and of themselves make the camp experience so phenomenal. Still, those
activities pale in comparison to experiencing Christ so powerfully in a week
that’s unencumbered by the stuff of

our typical day to day lives.
The de?ning moment of the week
usually happens on Wednesday night
when the gospel is shared with all of the
campers, and they are all encouraged to
pray to accept Christ into their hearts
for either the ?rst time or to renew their
relationship with Him. With all heads
bowed and all eyes closed, Pastor Brent
asks everyone who prayed a prayer of
acceptance to lift up their faces and look
at him, and then asks the same of those
renewing their commitment. Then, Pastor Brent asks the counselors to lift their
heads to see which of their campers are
looking forward.
I wish that I could show you their
faces. Boys and girls ages nine to eleven who at that moment put aside all of
the video games, television, toys, and
candy so that they could know God.
Kids who are so much more innocent
and humble than you or I, who want
only to be with Jesus. Kids who are
drawn to Christ despite their attention
de?cit disorders and the rampant onslaught of commercialism that they endure. Kids who at that moment get it.
