The Teenage Brain (May 2014) | Page 10

A little boy is alone in the world he is not entirely alone but health wise he is. Everyday he struggles, there is no cure for his struggle. This little boy has epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disturbance of electrical waves that occur in the brain. This occurrence is what causes a seizure. The National Health Institute of Health needs money to conduct research and find a cure for epilepsy.

Epilepsy causes seizures which can be frightening to those who have them. Seizures can strike at any movements and leave people confused and hurt. Seizures can cause many health issues. It can cause issues to social, emotional, and family health. one in 26 people will get epilepsy, and only two out of three people’s seizures will be controlled through medication. Even those whose seizures are controlled by medication may have breakthrough seizures, which can make life difficult. Still one-third of the millions of people with epilepsy have seizures.

Even though one out of 26 people will get epilepsy, only half or one percent of the 30 billion dollars that goes to the National Health Institute of Health from Congress, goes to the research of epilepsy. In order to for money to be given to find a cure for epilepsy Congress needs to pass the MODDERN Cures Act. This act will accelerate the production of new technology needed to treat people with epilepsy. People with epilepsy also need things like employment, education, driving laws and public awareness addressed for their needs. In order to achieve this, Congress needs to give money toward the development for a better life, for those people living with epilepsy.
