FEATURED MOTHER OF FILM

I ’ ve always had a voice .... It ’ s a privilege and now I have an opportunity to find space for the voices unheard and unrealized .

KARMA METZLER FITZGERALD

Writer , community developer , changemaker

Karma has always been fascinated by voices . “ I remember leaning against my dad ’ s legs listening to him talk with his fellow farmers ,” she recalled . “ The ebbs and flows of the stories , the ripples of their laughter – it was heaven .”
As a storyteller , she studies the power of words . “ I can change your mood , your day , and your life by the way I organize words . It ’ s power . It ’ s humbling but it ’ s necessary .”
It ’ s a privilege and now I have an opportunity to find space for the voices unheard and unrealized .
Karma ’ s gifts are in connection – finding ways to bring people together with the resources they need to thrive . Sometimes , that work is done through a political lens . Sometimes it ’ s found in her art as a storyteller , fiber artist , and community leader . When those worlds all collide , that ' s her nirvana .
While she started her career as a journalist and tv news producer , she ’ s spent much of the last several years in community development and politics . This year , she ’ s returning to her roots as a writer . Although she ’ s not sure yet how that calling will manifest , she sees the move as a homecoming . “ I want to give voice to the voiceless . I ’ ve always had a voice , and someone has heard me .
These days , Karma says she ’ s especially intrigued by the work of writer Dr . Clarissa Pinkola Estes . “ I ’ m more and more called to her work as I transition from the role of mother to crone . As Estes writes , “ Who is the crone ? She is the most dangerous , the most radical , the most revolutionary woman in existence .” And that ’ s right where Karma wants to be .
