Brief List of Agency Accomplishments 2012 - 2018 New Mexico Office of African American Affairs www.OAAA.state.nm.us Community Development  Organized Tuskegee Airman and Buffalo Soldier campaigns to complete monument installment and dedication at the Albuquerque Veterans Memorial Park  Held the NM African American Statewide Leadership Summit to hear concerns of the over 250 statewide stakeholder, formulate a strategic plan and 3 statewide implementation teams.  Represented Governor Susana Martinez with a New Mexico delegation during the solidifying of Albuquerque's historic Sister City Alliance with Zambia, the city’s first agreement with an African nation.  Governor Susana Martinez dedicated New Mexico’s 14th CYFD Heart Gallery, housed at the African American Performing Arts Center, in partnership to highlight the need for forever families for Black foster children.  Governor Martinez issued statewide proclamations to support Juneteenth programs in Bernalillo, Eddy, Curry, Sandoval, Doña Ana, Santa Fe, San Juan and Lea counties. The agency also increased staff attendance and funding support of over $35,000.  Agency hosted the first of its kind, statewide African American Women's Empowerment Summit with over 420 professional woman and students from Santa Fe, Clovis, Roswell, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas and Hobbs.  NM Black Expo set historical attendance numbers by attracting 4000+ from 13 New Mexico counties and surrounding states, while increasing statewide volunteer base to 100+, supporting Black business, economic development, education advancement, health advocacy, heritage and local talent.  Outstanding Service Awards, Senior Recognitions, 28 Days A Hero and Every Day Heroes programs honored over 400 educators, economists, health workers, civic leaders, elders and youth from around the state for their dedication and contributions to the advancement of Black families.  Record representation of agency staff serving on more than 50 statewide boards, commissions and committees. Healthcare Advocacy       Formed African American Infant Mortality and Maternal Health initiatives, worked with over 50 stakeholder’s to train 25+ UNM providers and students, offer families equitable maternal care and birthing options, collect birthing stories of 65 mothers who birthed in NM hospitals, support families with stress relief strategies and develop a birth equity collaborative with Black Health New Mexico, March of Dimes, UNM Health Science Center, NM Department of Health and CityMatch. Engaged 250 participants in Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties in the 90 Day Healthy Body Challenge to address social determinants of health, chronic disease prevention and management, healthy life styles and generational health to improve the quality of life. Affordable Care Act awareness video published. Worked with 26 health professionals to insure benefits of the act were known in the Black community statewide. Distributed videos to 7 counties (Bernalillo, Curry, Chavez, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Lea and Doña Ana) and held facilitated conversations regarding resources and support systems. Black HIV/AIDS Awareness initiatives with partners such as the New Mexico Department of Health, UNM Truman Health Center, CDC Faith Based Initiative, NM Department of Health and UNM Health Science Center to address bias, prevention and management services. Tested 200+ individuals during initiatives and community events. Organized diabetes awareness breakfast with the New Mexico Diabetes Association and the NM Martin Luther King Jr. Commission to form partnerships with 10+ faith based communities for education and awareness. Worked with the UNM Health Science Center to encourage over 200 youth to explore health professions.
