Many people do their best to help others in need around the country and throughout the world. While these problems can’t be solved by one person alone, one can surely have a strong and positive impact on others if they take the right action. One VHS student, Cameron Carlyle, is taking that action and is making an impact on people in Kumasi, Ghana.

This summer, sophomore Cameron Carlyle went to Ghana with her mom to help the African people of the small village known as Kumasi. Cameron, like most people, has wanted to help the less fortunate, but was surprised that she would have the chance to do so.

What she once thought was a spa getaway, quickly turned into a trip of a lifetime; she was going to Africa. This surprise from her parents caught Carlyle off guard, but she went along with it.

Getting out of her comfort zone is something Carlyle initially struggled with. The first week there she claims to have cried every night wanting to come back. However, it didn’t take her long to realize that if she could survive three weeks there, she could take on anything.

“Even though the people there didn’t have much, they were happy with what they had,” said Carlyle. “They were kind towards to one another and they appreciated life much more than many of my classmates back in US. It makes you appreciate things much more.”

In the future, Carlyle is planning on making an even bigger difference in the village.

“I plan on going back there next summer to visit the kids that basically became part of my family and helping them out again,” said Carlyle.

She would like to build a new hospital in the village that is much cleaner and a bigger than what they currently have. While she is currently raising money for this project, the Carlyle family is already making a difference; they are donating an incubator to the hospital.
