Songs & Swords Open
This summer, Mish and David went to a tournament in Franklin, TN that was hosted by the Music
City Fencing Club. The tournament was called Songs & Swords Mixed Epee Open. It was a pretty
unique tournament, and while rankings were not given at the tournament the trophies to win
were pretty sweet! At this tournament the bouts were set to music, and whoever had the most
touches at the end of the song won the bout. Several people signed up for the tournament, but
only fifteen participated in the end. The trophies were pretty amazing, there were trophies for
first, second, and third place, as well as trophies for those who made it 100+ touches, 200+
touches, and 300+ touches, and there were trophies for most touches in a single bout and most
touches overall. Even though our members didn’t win, they had a blast, made new friends, and
established some great tournament contacts.
“There’s no denying it, we were slaughtered, but I had a great time and we enjoyed ourselves
thoroughly.” Said club VP David Deitz, “I’m already looking forward to the next Songs & Swords
Open! Next time, we’ll be ready to win ourselves a trophy for the club.”
“I felt like a pincushion, but it was a very good learning experience.
Changes to Come.” Said Mish, “It was also great to meet other fencers from around the country,
and the non-traditional format was a great way to break the ice.”
