The Power of Self-Talk
What is Self-talk?
Self-talk is basically your inner voice, or the voice you hear in your mind that says things that you don't normally speak out loud. Whether you are aware of this or not, we all carry on a constant conversation with ourselves. And on occasion when we're emotionally excited, we'll actually speak what's on our mind out loud. For most of us we carry on this constant dialog without realizing or being aware of what we're doing.
Many years ago I read a book called Seeds of Greatness by Denis Waitley. Mr Waitley's principles encapsulated the philosophy that the "seeds" of greatness are essentially how we THINK about ourselves. This is also called our self-concept, or self-image. (Our identity) For many of us our self-concept was developed from our influences through parents, peers, and environment. This self-appraisal of ourselves can be positive in that it can lead men & women to happiness and success. Or it can unfortunately be a negative self-appraisal of oneself, that influences low self-esteem, depression and even mental and physical illness.
Our self-appraisal is how we THINK we are, and is a constant catalyst that influences how we FEEL at any given moment. And of course, how we feel is what influences behavior. The #1 reason why many fail to achieve worthwhile goals, is because they simply do not FEEL it. This is also called "motivation". What separates those that achieve success from those that don't, is how they FEEL. Because how we FEEL at any given moment directly affects our BEHAVIOR.
So, how does one maintain the motivation, or FEELINGS necessary to stay positive to accomplish worthwhile goals? To affect permanent and positive change, we much change who we ARE. That means we must change the INSIDE. The inside is how we THINK about ourselves. It's our constant SELF-TALK, it's what we say to ourselves about any given event, person, place or thing. This is also called our sub-conscious. The Bible calls it our "heart". Proverbs 23:7 "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee."
This "thinking in our heart" is self-talk. It's difficult for some to believe they have a spirit within them, and that their spirit actually listens to what they say. But if you'll start to speak to your spirit, or speak to yourself in a more positive way, your spirit will create the life you truly desire.
