Nothing is more contentious in the outdoors than wolves , their delisting from under the Endangered Species Act and subsequent management by the states . That ’ s what makes Roberts so courageous in the battle to delist Western Great Lakes wolves . In a day and age when saying the wrong thing can get you cancelled , especially in academia , Roberts , an associate professor at College of the Ozarks , says it like it is — and on the Congressional record before the Subcommittee on Water , Wildlife and Fisheries . In his testimony , Roberts unequivocally stated , “ Gray wolves are recovered in the United States . The science is clear ; this species is recovered , secure , and recovery goals have been met many times over . States have the ability , and an undeniable track record of species management and recovery , to effectively and sustainably manage this species for the benefit of the public they serve .” Bravo , Dr . Roberts .

Our first two-time loser , Gabriel seems hellbent on destroying America ’ s outdoor heritage . In 2023 , when we first named him our Villain , he introduced Assembly Bill 554 , which would have given animalrights organizations the power to civilly prosecute anyone they believed violated animal-welfare laws . While we defeated that bill , Gabriel has since authored Assembly Bill 28 , a first-in-the-nation measure that places an 11 percent “ sin tax ” on anyone who buys any firearm , precursor part or ammunition . The money collected from law-abiding firearm owners and hunters will pay for violent crime “ prevention ” and school safety measures . The tax amount is no accident and clearly is meant to destroy Pittman- Robertson funding , with the potential to break the North American Model of Conservation as we know it .
