Sci-Fi Lullabies Motherland:
thursday may 28 Songs of 20th Century
Women
Jack Fennell editor of ‘A Brilliant Void’ – a
collection of darkly funny short stories of Irish
science fiction - presents a panel discussion on
what makes Irish work in this area distinctive.
‘A Brilliant Void’ was the fifth book in the series
Recovered Voices, by Tramp Press. It featured
fifteen writers in the collection including Art
O’Riain, a native of Thurles.
The session will look at the historical elements
that came to bear on such writing in Ireland
and the context in which the pieces were
written. Now with a proliferation of new books
from writers, what is the future of the Sci-fi
genre here?
We’ll have readings from Sarah Davis Goff,
author of the dystopian ‘Last Ones Left Alive’
(Tinder Press) and Danny Denton ‘The Earlie
King & the Kid in Yellow’ (Granta) as part of the
session.

Featuring evocative projected images alongside
thought-provoking spoken word, Edel Murphy
and a live band perform iconic songs of
struggle and celebration from such greats as
Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Kate Bush,
Nanci Griffith, Richard Thompson, Dolly Parton
and The Beatles.
Motherland brings you through the Dustbowl of
the Great Depression into the homes of 1950’s
urban desperation, down streets of protest in
the 1960’s and into the confusion of 21st
century.
Following extensive tours with Grammy winning
shows ‘Celtic Woman’ and ‘Riverdance’, Edel
Murphy (singer, actor, musician) is delighted to
bring this powerful production on tour under
the musical direction of her long-time
collaborator, Ewan Cowley.
