Farewell Talking about Trees

The push and pull between family
bonds and the ties of culture are
explored with a light touch and a
perceptive eye for detail in this
delightful, semi-autobiographical family
drama from writer and director Lulu
Wang. ‘Talking About Trees’ chronicles the Sudanese Film
Club, a group of retired movie directors who try to
reopen a cinema in the city of Omdourman, just
outside of Khartoum. But this proves to be a huge
task.
Chinese American Billi (Awkwafina,
building on her zesty comic turn
in Crazy Rich Asians) and her family
return to China under the guise of a
fake wedding to stealthily say goodbye
to their beloved matriarch – the only
person that doesn't know she only has
a few weeks to live.
‘A funny, emotionally intricate and
deeply moving tale of severed
connections and renewed family ties’ -

Without pointing fingers, director Gasmelbari reveals
how a government controlled by Islamic
fundamentalists for the past three decades resulted
in the demise of an entire film industry and heritage,
with only a few remaining theatres screening
Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters in central
Khartoum.
Gasmelbari captures the daily grind of the Film Club.
His documentary is a quiet and contemplative look
at artists forced to face the reality that their work
can no longer exist where they live.
